Roger Federer is back to Where he belongs – No 1 Ranked Player in the World

Federer lost his No1 ranking in June 2010 . It took him a good two years and lot of hard work to climb back to the No 1 ranking after his Wimbledon 2012 win. The All England Lawn Tennis tournament 2012 had great hopes for Federer and his rival in the final Andy Murray. While a Federer win would create a 7 -17 -1 record ( Seven Wimbledon titles , 17 Grand Slam wins and the No1 ranking ) , a Murray win, it would end the wait of 76 years for the British to see a home winner.( For a change , the crowd was not with Federer who is well liked and loved at Wimbledon) .Murray carried this great hopes in to the final only to be denied and the British hopes now would move to 77 years !
The path to the final was somewhat made easy by the early shock exit of Nadal. . Federer had a turbulent third round against Frenchman Julien Benneteau. The Frenchman played unbelievable tennis , returning so well and finding winners at will and he was up Two sets to love against Federer before Federer dug deep and with a fourth set tie break in his favour come through in five sets. Rest of the matches, Federer was his normal self . smooth and getting past his rivals with no great concern. The tough challenge was in the Semis against Djokovic. In the semifinal against Djokovis, Federer played superbly , was in control and pushed and hustled Djokovic to come out winner in four sets. The stage was set for a great final .

Murray came through the hard way. Tough matches against Ivo Karlovic, Baghtatis , David Ferrer and then a four setter in the semifinal against Tsonga and British hopes rose as he got to the finals to have a crack at the elusive title for a home player.

With Vijay Amritaraj and Alan Wilkins at the commentary , it was a great match . The first two sets played with the roof open, had Federer in poor form( more unforced errors) , tentative and Murray calling the shots. With the scores at one set apiece , rain come down and the roof was closed. The Federer took over and stamped his class and authority over the match and Murray. Murray kept the chase but it was Federer who was dictating the game .With long service games on his serve, Murray managed to hold on but it was just… Federer found the breaks in the third and fourth set to win his Seventh title at the Wimbledon.

Federer was all of class -- delightful top spins , back hand cross court whiplashes , playing deep in to Murray’s forehand , kept him guessing, came to the net occasionally , lobbed and smashed and made Murray run around the court. There was grace written all over when Federer was playing. It was a symphony of sorts.
All the hard work that Murray and his team did for him to win, was undone by the genius in Federer. It left Murray in tears at the end and it was not a great sight to watch on Television , a young man in tears. It also showed how much of stress and expectations that he had carried on his shoulders . Weeping was the option to get rid of it. Murray will learn his lessons from this defeat. It was just that the man who played against him was too strong mentally as well as physically for him.
Where does Federer go from him here-

It has been not been an easy journey to get back to World no 1.

Federer is getting to 31 .. He still looks exceptionally fit .It was Murray and Djokovic who were exhausted after their matches ( both are under 24 ) and not Federer.

Sampras , whom Federer considers his idol was 31 when he retired and he won the US open 2002 as he retired. Come this August Federer will be 31.Should Federer do the same ? Quit when he is on High ?

I think with his fitness and his passion to win more , Federer can go on for two more seasons easily. He played this Wimbledon with a back niggle but even with that, he was good.

Looking forward to renewed rivalry of Federer with Djokovic , Nadal and Murray of course .. It is too early to call it quits Roger
