40 Years of Employment -- Gratitude Series -- the High School My Teachers - Part 7

It has been sometime since I wrote on this topic and it is time to get this rolling again. While I will come to my Middle school and my average scores in the School leaving exams and the notorious section of the class that I belonged to in Middle school, I will talk about my High school first.

I did write earlier  that I had chosen the Commerce stream when I was in Standard 7, I moved from my existing school to another school to do my School leaving exams . So, everything was new - One thing that came through was that since I liked the subject, my performances improved dramatically to be challenging the school toppers..

In addition to liking the subjects, it was my teachers who made a big impact on me – Three of them were just too good in imparting not just knowledge but in shaping who we were. The main subjects – Accountancy and Commerce were handled by Sirs , Mr Thambuswamy (still stays in touch with us, connects and takes classes the same way he did back in the 80’s), Dhayalan Sir (in touch on Whatsapp and in addition to the Accounting and Commerce Dhayalan Sir took Moral Sciences class) and Mr Ambrose (in touch over WhatsApp) took care of Economics. The threesome were an awesome combo to get . Each of them spent time tapping into us and encouraging us to do well. Mr Dhayalan had an awesome physique and when one meets him the first time, you would hesitate to connect, but the physique betrayed his soft nature and care that he had for all his students.

One thing that we started in our final year of school was a Bank that catered to the needs of the students (more helped the hostel mates). The bank functioned at lunch time at the school – We gave loans, collected deposits, made profits and donated that to Charity. I was the Chief Manager !! It was a unique experience – (Hope I do not get a notice from the Central Bank for not getting approvals to run a bank).

The other big thing that Dhayalan Sir pushed us was to do Service -- There was something or the other that he found for a few of us to get involved during lunch time .. Just these are things that shape you in the future.

For the public exams that we had to face, the three of them took extra efforts to coach in addition to regular classes, conduct more mocks – All of these were rewarding .

For our connect after nearly 38 years or so in 2022, Mr Thambuswamy took classes for us.. It was vintage stuff to listen to him to teach the Basic Rules of Accounting—It never changes and a True Accountant will never forget them.

My deepest gratitude to these Teachers – they always taught with passion – Always available to help, listen to us and give us solutions. They created such an impact on you that you will never forget them.

I remember you showed us the reunion photo of the accountancy teacher teaching you all in the same class! Now we know the noble soul who sowed the seeds of service mindset in you. A great student (you) making your teacher proud :-)

This is a vivid pen picture of events that took place nearly four decades ago in Don Bosco Higher Secondary School located in Perambur. This may be viewed as an overall recollection of school days by an outsider but being a classmate of Sri in this batch, this gives me altogether a different perspective that literally takes me to those golden days. The description of the services, knowledge and commitment of those teachers have been brought out with specific accuracy in this post.

I am one among those who took loan from the bank mention by Sri and we did ‘binding of text books’ for our school mates. The little profit that emerged was a new and different experience of happiness that goes beyond words.

There is always an element of nostalgia when we recollect our school-day events and the post adds more to this with the specifics provided by Sri regarding our teachers. Those are wonderful and enjoyable (nonetheless to mention useful) moments bestowed on us and we always remember, relish and cherish these in our memories. The contemporary generation can feel the depth of this description and we take some console in chewing these thoughts down the memory lane as getting back to those days is next to impossible.
But, Sri was obviously lying in his saying that ‘my performances improved dramatically to be challenging the school toppers’. In fact, he was (still is) the school topper and all were trying to catch up with him.

You had chosen the commerce group in class seven in the late 70 s . There must be a reason . The word chosen shows clearly that it was not thrust upon you . You worked hard with enthusiasm and proved to yourself and the world that your choice is correct -- Vetri Selvan Science Group DB 1981-83 batch
