RYLA and the Rotary Chennai week celebration
The annual RYLA went off well -- The sad bit , I was not able to participate due to travel overseas-- As usual 60 school girls belonging to the Saidapet Girls school had their week end out and treated to great sessions on career building , motivation , Integrity , work ethics etc., by reputed trainers who volunteered to do this- Arni Rifarel Ford India HR GM and Komala from the plan took sessions on day two and shared success stories with the children-- It was very nice of Arni and Komala to spend their Sunday ( half day ) with the school children
The Rotary club that I belong to could not be part of the Chennai week celebration ( Aug 22 -29 ) and so we had one session on Chennai on 7th Sep 08- My humour club enthusiasm rubbed off to my Rotary colleagues as well and we had two speakers from the Triplicane chapter come talk to us on Chennai -- And they did send us in to peels of laughter with touch on the Madras Bashai ( Bejar , Assalata ponan , kasmalam ( this is Sanskrit ) ) . Chennai traffic rules , Chennai politicians , Chennai kollywood stars etc., We also had a Chennai quiz and it was amazing to see how the topography has changed over the last 50 years and to recollect some great landscapes of the city that we belong to-- Some questions that we could not answer ( where is Kolaikaran pettai ? Answer : Royapettah and the name came from Kalu udaikara idam ( pettai ) and then overtime changed to Kolaikaranpettai !! ) - Two institutions that have refused to changed to Chennai name -- one is the Madras High Court and the other is the Madras University-- One of the three oldest Corporation is the Chennai Corporation along with London --Ice house got its name because Ice was imported from the US and stored there ( expensive commodity used by the rich in those days !! So many interesting anecdotes came through the Quiz and out Quiz master is special -- he is Sriram who comes on the page 2 of the Hindu many times and is a heritage walk specialist in Chennai and we are proud to say that he is a Rotarian from our club
The learning on Chennai was steep
Formula one
What a race it was -- Pre race there was talk of Kimi Raikonen the world champion lacking motivation and fire to drive -- History was with Raikonen- he had won the previous three Belgian GP in a row for the past three years-- Saturday's qualifying showed him in poor light-- he was fourth on the grid-- but on Sunday on the track , he showed a different mettle-- he charged down overtook his Ferrari teammate Massa and thanks to a error by Hamilton , went up front and this was went pretty much till the 42nd lap of the total 44 laps -- There was prediction of rain but one thought that it will not affect the race results-- But the 43 rd lap saw some great racing-- First Hamilton charged on Raikonen , got off the track, took a short exit , went in front , backed off and had wheel to wheel driving with Raikonen and went up in front- Raikoene charged back and got the lead only to loose it pretty soon-- Meanwhile the wet track started playing havoc and everyone slowed down and wanted to drive the last lap through without any crash out-- Raikonen did not manage that and went out on the penultimate lap loosing control of his car on the wet track-- Hamilton maintained his balance and came home -- Massa followed-- the third place went to Heidfield and was dramatic and showed what a driver who can master the wet conditions could do-- heidfield overtook more than three cars on the last lap -- As the others slowed down to control the car , Heidfield charged on them and being the wet race conditions expert he could do it easily-- This was probably the first time , I saw the results change dramatically on the last lap of a race- Later Hamilton was docked 25 second penalty for his skipping and getting off track and was moved to third place and Massa was declared winner - At this , the difference between the two drivers is only two points for the title-- the clear thing that has emerged is that Raikonen is out of the race for retaining his world championship title
