Tennis -- The Australian Open

There were some glorious matches over the week end, both in the men's singles and in the women's singles.

  • First Marin Cilic the 14th seed finally got over the hold of Del Potro the 4th seed . Cilic had lost to Del Potro at the same stage in the last year Australian open and in the US open and it was time for him to get in to the big stage . Cilic is somewhat a favourite to follow for he has been the Chennai open winner for the past two years and so the support for him to win . It was easy for Cilic as Del Potro who I thought did not play to his potential ( may be he is suffering a injury and he came in to this match after a five setter win over American James Blake ) only played bright in matches . The quality of Tennis was great and it was a 20 year old slugging with a 21 year old and that augurs well for Tennis .
  • Any Roddick won over Gonzalez in five sets again. Gonzalez was on top but he just lost in when he was about to win. A line call that was reversed in favour of Roddick after a referral to the Hawk eye messed him up and he decided to loose the match . He was so upset , kept thinking about the lost point , kicked water bottles around at his seat of rest and then lost total focus. Very important difference between winning and loosing. And as I thought about the video that I saw on "getting energy " back and the reference to payers who recoup energy between points , I saw Any Roddick just do that . Change the racquet from the playing hand to the other ,walk away, not worry about the point played and then gain the energy . It just shows how you can loose the focus on what you need to achieve and watching Gonzalez through away the match was just not the right way to win !!
  • Another remarkable comeback which is still continuing in to second week of the Australian open is the comeback of Former women's Champion Justine Henin from Belgium. Having taken a break from the game for close to two years to recoup a broken marriage and burn out , Henin showed no glimpse of having not played competitive tennis . She played a top notch match against her country women young Yanina Wickmayer who grew up idolising Henin. Incredible shot making , catching corners and retrieving from difficult situations was the order of the match by both players but Henin's experience prevailed. One more significant event in Women's Tennis following the comeback of Kim Clijsters who came back from delivering a baby and won the US open . Women can hold their heads high and aim high looking at these two tennis stars who are world champions and a right example to emulate .
  • Cheers to the hard working women of the world

Football

The EPL cannot get tighter than this . A single point separates the top three teams. Each of them have a great chance to win the title. I thought Arsenal are playing brilliant football for the moment. With all their players recovered and fit from injuries ( Edwardo , Denilson , Rosicky etc., ) and lead by the young Spanish thinking mid fielder Cesc Fabregas , they have played attacking football and are in very good form. ManU have been very patchy but still up there and competitive. Chelsea have shown glimpses of slump but are still hanging on . Should be very interesting next few matches as the top teams will clash and the door will open up for the favourites to win the title.
