Powerful men need to validate their sense of power and feel in control. And they feel that sense of power when they target women- Ram Jethmalani Lawyer
It is a battle of Ideologies and wits -- Omar Abdullah - Jammu and Kashmir CM on youth being killed in police firing
You people tell me the date. I will quit exactly on that day -- M.Karunanidhi CM of Tamilnadu to journalists who asked about his retirement plan.

The Rotary New year starts

Rotary follows a July - June calendar , so the baton changes hand during this time at all Rotary clubs through the world, including our club, have a new set of charged up Rotary Leadership teams that take mantle and want to do better than the earlier team. And that is good healthy competition ….
I really liked the Rotary theme for this year 2010-11 which goes as follows - " Building Communities , Bridging Continents ".. The reason I liked the theme was two fold -- one it tells the world what the Rotarians do as a Rotarian and two , the theme was very contemporary and reflected on what we need to do in terms of bringing the continents closer -- Truly a Global approach-
The last year theme , (my personal view ) was threatening -- the theme was " The future of Rotary is in your hands ".

I also liked our new District Governor Olivannan who spoke at the installation function( of the new team ) at our club. His talk was very simple , direct , very practical and connected with everyone. Have not heard anyone do that for sometime . One message he gave was very inspiring and true at Rotary -- He said at Rotary " Leaders change but Leadership does not " -- How true !! Rotary has a great succession planning program in place and is developing leadership all the time .

The Football Fever
We do not have to worry about Maradona taking his clothes off - The German team did that to his team in the Quarter Finals. The German team looks very strong with a great blend of youth power and experience . It is also a global side . The German team has players of Polish , Serbian , Turks , Ghanaian , Brazilian origin and of course Germans players in it . Very interesting team. Klose and Podolski are off Polish origin , Cacau is Brazilian , Boateng is from Ghana ( his brother played for Ghana )
Watch out for them to just not lift this year's World cup but the next one in 2014. Their fire power team is full of youngsters who have started their international careers just last year. You could see their stamina and skill as time and again they beat the Argentine players to the ball and to the goal. They are my favourites to lift the title.
The other team that was my sentimental favourite that lost out was Brazil. Brazil relaxed after scoring a early goal and the Dutch made them pay a heavy price for that. Spain and Uruguay , the other semi finalists are capable of upsetting things on their own day. Interesting semi final matches coming up this week leading to final over the next week end
Tennis - Federer Magic on the wane ? !
Once Federer lost in the Quarter finals , the Wimbledon championship to me lost its sheen . No , I am not saying Tomas Berdych did not deserve a place in the final . It is just that I want to see Federer keep winning . Federer by his own standards has had a poor 2010. A quarter final exit at French Open and now at Wimbledon at the same stage . He has been struggling to keep form -- Will he retire ? He is 28 and must be considering this thought .. He needs a great recoup of energy if he wants to keep winning titles and be hungry about winning them . Federer touched his lowest ranking at World number 3 post the Wimbeldon loss.
Nadal played a athletic final match to win l at Wimbledon. It is difficult to challenge him in terms of physical endurance on a tennis court and his court coverage is amazing and his retrieving skills are unparallel and he can find great corners of the court on the opponents side . He did that to win in straight sets against Berdych.
On a Indian note Leander kept his date with Grand Slam wins by winning the mixed doubles with Clara Black ( 12th Grand Slam for Paes ). Paes played some splendid doubles tennis and looked very sharp and fit at 37years. One thing that I noticed is he is enjoying his Tennis and so the success keeps coming to him. With Paes success , we need to be happy about what Saina Nehwal has done in the Women's Badminton area climbing up to World number 3 and beating Famed Chinese players enroute to success at tournaments . If Saina continues her focus , she is going to keep the Indian flag flying high ( the sad part , once Saina came back to India after these wins , she was part of a fashion show and cat walk -- Hope the tinsel town stays away from her and allow her racquet to do the talking )
No Grand Slam Champion in sight for India or the Great Britain either -- Andy Murray lost out in the semis to Nadal and with that loss, he is still a Scotsman-- When he wins the Wimbeldon , he will be British !!

Hopefully Andy will do it next year. He is a big hope for the local fans after Tim Henman. Probably he will achieve what no Brit has achieved over 70 years after the legend Fred Perry.
