Honesty Pays
Auto rickshaw drivers in Chennai are a much maligned lot. So when E >Mahendran an auto driver did something that was worth emulating it came as a pleasant surprise. Two months ago , a passenger forgot a check for rs 58 lakhs, a laptop and a mobile phone along with some important documents, in mahendran;s auto. Instead of pocketing the stuff , Mahendran handed over to the city police commissioner. The police honoured him with a check of Rs 2,000

Kerla

While me in Haryana visit orphanages in search of brides, the cows of Kerla are awaiting bulls from Israel. Hit by shortfall in Milk production, the government is importing 20 pedigreed holstein friesians and jersey bulls, so as to cross breed them with the cows. If everything works out, the bulls will land in a month, hopefully to the delight of the cows

Lessons from movie Chakde India -- By Naryanamoorthy

The other day, my wife and I were perhaps among the very few over 50-year-olds in the mostly-twentyishcrowd watching the film ChakDe in Bangalore. •You had to be there to believe the shouts of joy that accompanied every goal India scored in the imaginary tournament in the movie. The mood at the end was as if India had actually won the women’s world cup in hockey
I can appreciate this mood since I too felt similar joy and pride when hundreds of cameras clicked at me holding our national flag, on India and my being declared the winners of the prestigious world entrepreneur award among the forty-odd competing nations at Monaco in 2003.
As I exited the theatre after watching ChakDethat day, several youngsters asked me for my reaction to the movie. My answer was simple. I said I wanted to see the movie become a reality not just in hockey but in every sphere.
The recipe for such a success was most wonderfully conveyed by Shah RukhKhan and those wonderful women hockey players in the movie. Let me recount them here.
We have to identify as Indians first and rise above our affiliations with our states, religions and castes.
We must accept meritocracy and enthusiastically play the role we are best suited to.
We must embrace discipline to strictly follow every step required for success.
We have to put the interest of our nation ahead of our personal interests, subordinating our egos and biases.
Finally, we have to put in tremendous hard work and make short-term sacrifices for long-term glory.
I have immense faith and optimism in the youth of this country. But, will we get our leaders to set examples for hundreds of millions of Indian youth? I wish more and more of our leaders see Chak De and learn these precious lessons

Humour Club

I managed to attend this month's meeting and had a whale of time as the jokes came in plenty and in quick succession-- they were clean ( no reading between lines ), not hurting any class or religion and were a joy to the ear ( narasama iilai )-- the Triplicane chapter meets every second Sunday of the month at the PS School at Mylapore at 4 PM- you could check this out from the "Hindu -Events column" -- there is a open session that goes on for an hour and fifteen minutes and then there is a invitee speaker-- in the open sessions the change that has happened is that children have stared coming up to the podium tell jokes-- this week we had four children who came up and cracked out real good ones-- Speaks a lot for their courage to come against a audience of nearly 500 people and speak and make them laugh-- All the kids that spoke this Sunday were in the age group of six years to eight years-The guest speaker was S. V.Shekar and there was no dearth of humour-- bring your family to this monthly event and I can guarntee you that you will enjoy every moment and go back relaxed..
