Dec 22nd updates

The Rotary work on the week end
It was the final push in the fight against Polio--Two more vaccination sessions have been arranged - One on 21st Dec and the other on Feb 1st-- It is a sad thing that insipte of the best efforts of the Rotary and various agencies , we have been unable to eradicate polio in India --Our club was allotted two health centres to take care- One was the high profile Thousand lights and the other was in Chinthadripet ( new booth to handle ) -- It was a tough place to get in amidst the closeness to River Coouvam and the slums -- The volunteers did their best to get to the various gullies and have the children immunised but tough task-- Also there were rumours that floated indicating that the polio vaccination was creating ill health and leading to deaths as well
The second one and that was big for our club was the installation of the Ultrasound equipment at our medical centre in Nerkundram -- Thanks to the benevolent support of Mrs Pramila Narasimhan ( Swadeshimitran - newspaper Mr C.S.Narasimhan's wife ) we got this expensive GE equipment commissioned -- Now the centre has a lab facility , ECG, X ray equipment and now with the Ultrasound we are set -- We need to make noise in and around the areas of Nerkundram and get people in to this facility-- pricing for the tests is at one third of the costs elsewhere in a commercial organisation and at this price , it is more than viable -- We had a very small well arranged function to inaugurate the machine ( cost cutting ) --Mrs Pramila Narasimhan is a person to adore and admire -- She does all this to ensure that poor and needy get access to medical facilities and requests that all work done is in remembrance of her late husband who passed away in 2004-- I had the chance to work with her on a Tamil translation of the work that her husband and Swadeshmitran the newspaper did and was amazed at her diligence to get things right and also the fact she had energy to call me at her time of 1 AM ( she is a research scientist in the US ) and visits Chennai once in six months-- She must be in her early seventies but give credit to her for the energy and dedication to make this happen-- We are so happy from the club to have found such a patron
Cricket
There were two great fourth innings run chase -- one by India at Chennai and the other by South Africa at Perth--
The Indian chase was unexpected and even we ( general janata ) would have been okay for India to loose !! After being pushed to the back foot for three days , India were given life by none other than the England team - Strauss and Collingwood on the fourth day instead of going after the bowling defended for life as if they were on the last day of the test match defending for a draw-- This played in to the Indian Team hands and they got a target that was not stiff or looked a mountain to climb-- Then on the fourth day afternoon Sehwag attacked with gusto and took the wind out of the Englishmen-- Deteriorating pitch , ball is moving etc., does not impact him-- the fantastic 68 ball 83 got him the Man of the Match and then it was clear there was a chance for the Indians -- Not sure , they have catapulted many a occasion on the last day and rubbed salt in to their patriotic followers -- not to be -- this time with Sachin leading the way , victory was achieved and that too a memorable one-- It was good team effort with the bowlers doing well , the batters batting well and the fielding razor sharp and lead very well by Dhoni .One concern was the "Dravid Wall " getting breached but in the next test that is on currently at Mohali , we realised how firm the " Wall " was.
South Africa's incredible win was again fashioned by good team effort with everyone chipping in--Also showed that Aussie lack of sting in their bowling-- My thought Aussie are being readied for a decline in their number one status very soon
