The Rotary District Conference

This is a annual event that the Rotary District conducts -- A two day event , it brings together clubs that are grouped in to the district-- The District principle does not follow the local district demarcation but follows the rotary demarcation-- For example the club that I represent is part of Rotary district 3230 that has over 100 clubs affiliated to it- The spread is Chennai and upcountry that covers North Arcot and some parts of South Arcot as well -- A mega event , this year it attracted close to 4000 delegates- Titled " Vasantha Vizha " or Spring fest , the event was organised at the Trade Center in Nandambakkam Chennai -- Although I have been a Rotarian for close to five years now , I have avoided going to these events ( Signing up a weekend for this was a life balancing challenge ) - this year my President was insistent on more members signing up and signing up , I did -- It was a occasion to learn -- Day one had two life time achievement awards given--
One was to Suresh Krishna CMD Sundaram Fasteners and the other to neuro Surgeon Dr Kalayana Raman who is a Rotarian by himself -- both are outstanding individuals in their own field and I thought it fit to share Mr Suresh Krishna's acceptance speech that was very inspiring --
He started saying that excellence is something that you live with and if you accept mediocrity in anything you are compromising on excellence-- he compared this to doing a fruit salad where each fruit had to be selected carefully , peeled cut and then put together - one rotten fruit of any type can be a disaster as far as the fruit salad is concerned -- he continued on how to build strong organisations that can weather any storm --he indicated the role of the CEO and the communication with employees , suppliers and alike as key-- he said if you think you have communicated enough , it is not enough.. You need to keep communicating all the time -- and communication brings in trust and what brings in trust -- he said speaking the truth alone can bring in trust- It helps to speak the truth since you do not have to worry about what you said and at which point and to which person -- Mr Suresh Krishna informed that he does about three to four communication meetings across the 10 to 12 locations of his organisation - he talked about Vision coming through over a period of time for the Orgn., as the CEO talks to Employees , suppliers , dealers etc., Vision cannot be a cut and paste of a another company's vision --His view was a good CEO should be able to handle tough times and one important aspect needed for a CEO was to understand and pick up things that does not meet the normal eye- he ended saying India can be built by Indians and one cannot expect someone else to come and be our saviour

Other programmes ran in through the day --A Neya Naana type show by Vijay TV Gopinath followed by a Solomon Papiah Pattimandram , a neruku Ner with Bhagyaraj, music by Srinivas and a fashion show were other line items in addition to the Rotary agenda items -- People from outside Chennai sign up to this event with their families -- For them it is a affordable week end event in Chennai and with so many cultural type activities tagged on and a diet crashing lunch / Dinner menus with a fellows(h ) ip , there cannot be any other attractive package
Second day had SPB and Kavignar Vali being recognised and also the roll out of the forthcoming year plans for the Rotary

Nandan Nilekani's book Imagining India

Thanks to few colleagues who thought it fit , I got the right and great opportunity to start reading this book that is totally different and does not talk about Infosys in a big way- I have read about 1/5th of the book and thought of sharing a para that talks about how we can make mistakes as we deploy policies without understanding the realities or the ground level scenario- This happens most of the time and most cases this happens when govt does something --The topic is family planning and the Minister for health who was to implement tools for family planning was against family planning in principle !!The Indian policy during this decade ( 1950's ) emphasized the rhythm method. Rural India was targeted for raising awareness of the method and one villager remarked of its success, " they talked of the rhythm method to people who didn't know the calendar. Then they gave us rosaries of coloured beads.. At night people couldn't tell the red bead for " don't " from the green for " go ahead ".
Funny that the population continued to grow through the 1950's and the 1960's !!
More thoughts as finish reading the book
