One would have not expected this to happen in F1 racing -- But Renault seems to have done this and managed to keep it under wraps for nearly a year
Renault forced their second driver to crash , bringing in the safety car which allowed Alonso their first driver to get ahead in front and then win the race - I watched this race on TV last year, being the inaugural race at Singapore 2008 ( night race as well )-- I looked at my blog of Sept 30th , 2008 and i have mentioned the Nelson Piquet crashing and how Alonso got the help -- But I did not think it was a set up nor did any one - I do remember that the commentators could not figure out the reason for the crash ( mechanical problem / brake failure etc., ) - All of us dismissed this as a accident - But m what a turnaround..
It all started to happen when Nelson Piquet who fell out dramatically with Briatore, who sacked the Brazilian in August this season for non performance -Nelson Piquet then started singing a different tune . First , one thought it was a accusation of a non perfuming aggrieved employee who was sacked . No .. not to be --
This week Flavio Briatore the Manager /Principal of Renault Racing and their chief Engineer quit the Renault team over the allegations of the crash being fixed- After investigation, Briatore has been banned for life for this act and Renault team handed over a suspended sentence - this was due to the fact ,Renault have demonstrated they had absolutely no moral responsibility for what took place – that’s to say Renault F1 the team didn’t know, and still less of course the company – it would be wrong in the circumstances to impose an immediate penalty.
Piquet, who as whistleblower was given immunity for his part in the conspiracy.
There are lot of lessons to be learnt from this --
Briatore was a very successful manager and very charismatic and Formula one needed people like him- He was solely responsible for Alonso \winning his world championship title -- He had that knack to identify good drivers , get the right car , develop race strategy and create a winner -- All this was good - Where he failed was , not able to live with reality and committing mistakes to overcome the reality of the current situation -- For the past two seasons Renault has been pale shadow in terms of the performance since Alonso left to join McLaren -- A team that was on top , could not match the rest once the combination was disturbed- Subsequently , Alonso came back to Renault but that did not help either -
Now Briatore had to work hard , maintain ethics , set high standards of Integrity and honesty and create a winner - he probably did not have patience for all that and threw his weight around , wanted to win a race hook or crook and has paid a very heavy price for that-
In the end it all matters down to basics and then maintaining the basics all the time -- that is the only to get to the top and also be there - Alas , the flamboyant Italian did not think that way !!
Huge management lesson , i thought from this episode ...
1. It is easy to get to the top but remaining there is the key .
2. Once you reach the top , you cannot relax - You need to continue the hard good work
3. Basic Principles of Honesty , integrity and ethical dealings can never be compromised.
4. You cannot throw your weight because you are the BIG GUY and get away . Time catches up with you
5. Lot of people aspire to go to the top -- this is a great example of how not to go the top and try to be there
6. Once you get knocked off , there is no recourse , so watch every step and action you take
