Quotes of the week

India has not caused the global warming problem. We are a deal - maker, not a deal- breaker -- Jairam Ramesh Union Minister for environment and forests

Seize the opportunity of the Commonwealth games to change our behavioural pattern . Behave as residents of a international city- P.Chidambaram Union Home Minister to Delhiites

I was selfish before, everyone is , but until i became a father - David Beckam footballer

If you keep a pickle for more than two years, it turns rancid. I feel LK Advani;s period is more or less over- Manohar Parrikar BJP leader on the utility of the party's opposition leader

The Navratri - Kollu at home

It is a event that is run so efficiently by my wife and mom together -- Right from planning the invitee list, making up a probable list from the invitees of who will come home definitely ( risk assessment with high , medium and low confidence levels ), planning for unplanned visitors, to planning the "Sundal " and Sweet of the day was done very meticulously . My wife plans for the mementos based on the invite list, buys gifts with great care ( cannot have shortages ) and runs the entire day wise event with a huge check list of people which she updates on a daily basis to check out the visitors -
This year we must have had more than 60 ++ families ( around 100 people plus )turn up home over the nine day period -- family members , friends , my daughter's class mates -- My role is very limited I had to ensure that the Steps that host the dolls and the dolls are got down from the attic ,assembled on day one and once the event is done , roll up the set and ensure that they are back in the attic- I nearly messed the setting up on day one - I took leave on the wrong day and then was corrected ( you can imagine the counselling ) to take leave on the right day and that meant stretching out to work from home - mercifully , i did take leave on the day the Steps were to be disengaged and put back --
A little bit about the Steps that hosts the dolls -- The set at home is made of wooden planks and is easy to handle as per my wife -- I have been suggesting a Steel one but every year , she avoids the change and eggs me to set up the wooden one -- The wooden set was made in 1976 by a carpenter under my late father's supervision and design and after 33 years still works and is easy to set and fit up -- cannot believe that this was made when i was ten years old and has so far survived at least 30 active years of being set up and remaining in the attic- Do they not say " Old is Gold " -- here is the shining example of that-

It was a great work by the ladies at home ( wife and mom ) and they handled one and all with great aplomb and with ease - Not only they did that , but also visited other houses to which they were invited on schedule and as per timings - I was amazed at the energy that my wife had to do all this over the nine day period -
Fantastic Attitude is the right word to use to describe all this that was done and this does not go out just to my family but to all those people who enjoyed the nine day festivities and made every day a sparkling day

Sri, it was nice to read about your role at home -- something we often overlook in our people in the hustle and bustle of getting work done at work.

It brings home the point of not only the important roles family members and spouses play to keep the home front functioning like a well oiled machine but also the need to have variety which re-energizes us and commits us to continue doing our work well and with the right attitude and commitment.

Thank you for the post!

Sri- Nice blog to share your Kolu experience. Reading through your blog was funny because i did the same things you did (bringing the dolls form the attic, setting the stand, ofcourse taking wife and mother to other's kolus) etc...It is time to move to the steel stand, though i should admit it has always been a tough experience getting it right every year. I need to establish some ISO procedures to get my steel stand right.Good blog..
