Quotes of the week

Gossiping is fundamental to being human -- Nicholas Elmer Social psychologist

He is somebody I find a lot of inspiration in. He ended up doing so much and changed the world just by the power of his ethics - Barack Obama on Mahatma Gandhi

I compete with myself, not anybody else -- Priyanka Chopra Actor when asked about rival Katrina Kaif

I do not need Mr Jaswant Singh to write a certificate for my grandfather - Nusli Wadia -- Businessman and grandson of Mohammed Ali Jinnah on the former BJP leader's book

The US Open -- Amazing Champion in the women's and a new champion in the Men's category

It was a fairy tale dream run for Kim Clijsters -- Having been off the circuit for more than two years to raise a family and then coming back as a wild card unseeded player to win the tournament was a astonishing feat !!Clijsters proved that she could compete at the highest level after such a layoff- And this will be a great boost to all mothers and mothers to be in the sports fraternity -- Success is a good poison to spread around.
It was also fantastic to watch her 18 month old daughter relish seeing herself and her mom on the big screen - These were truly unforgettable pictures to watch.
Clijsters won her match against Serena Williams in the semi final through a point penalty -- too much is being made in to this by one and all but i think the line umpire was right in calling the foot fault ( does not matter if it lead to match point situation , the umpire was doing her job ) -- Serena did not play Tennis at this point but tried to win through her outbursts and this did not get her anywhere -- Fines and Penalties are going to follow her --

In the final , Clijsters was in control throughout the match and she won in straight sets against Caroline Wozniaki -- this year all the seeds tumbled and we had a unseeded player ( Clijsters playing against 9th seed Wozniaki ) -- So much for the rankings and seedlings that are done --

In the men's event -- Andy Murray ( was one of the favourites to have a shot at the title ) got knocked out and so were Roddick and Nadal -- Nadal for once was a sorry figure on the court against the eventual winner Del Potro -- Normally Nadal chases down everything that is thrown at him and gets better as the match progress -- But in his semi final match against Del Petro . he was pushed and shoved around the court and thrashed in straight sets -- Federer smoothly entered the final but the script changed in the final -- DelPotro overcame the master in five gruelling sets -- Federer won a great match in the 2009 French Open semi final against Del Potro but today he was at the receiving end -- I had written in my June 8th blog that Del Petro is someone to watch out for and here it is -- the New US open champion of 2009 -- It has been 30 ++ long years since a Argentine won a grand slam -- Del Potro will continue to make headlines if he keeps his game together -- Rock Solid as it was in the US Open tournament -
On the India show , Paes and Bhupathi did well in the doubles with Paes winning the doubles against Mahesh in the final -- There was lot of news on Somdev Devvarman entering the main draw -- If that was lauded as a creditable effort, the same goes to show the talent that is available in India - Long way to go .... Ugh..

Interesting post match comments by Del Potro and Federer-- here it goes
,
I had two dreams this week," said Del Potro, who becomes the second Argentine to win the US title after Guillermo Vilas, who was in the stadium to witness his young compatriot's victory.
"One was to win the US Open and the other one is to be like Roger. One is done, but I need to improve a lot to be like you," he said, looking at the five-time champion.
"You fought until the final point. You are a great champion. I'm very happy to be here with this crown, with these people, on this court. This will be in my mind forever."
After a final that lasted four hours and six minutes, Federer said: "I would like to congratulate Juan Martin on an unbelievable tournament. I had a great one but he was the best.
"I would have never believed I could win five in a row here. It has been an amazing run for me."

The Indian Cricket Team win in Srilanka --

No one can do this but the Indian Cricket team -- they can take you to the peak of Mount Everest with great play one day and then the next day they can drop you right off the top to the foothills -- that is Indian team for you for a long time -- they did this exactly over the week end - First they won against New Zealand comfortably and on the next day ,lost by the biggest margin to Srilanka -- However they redeemed themselves by winning the title on Monday-- the thing that we lack is consistency and playing each game to win

Conflicting Events to attend !!
The Sunday of this week gave me a great challenge -- I had the Humour club monthly meeting at 4 Pm , Doctor review at 5 PM , Monza Formula one at 5:30 PM and a social function at 5 PM as well -- Why do everthing that you want to do come at the same time ?
Finally , i had to let go of my monthly stress reliver , the humour club program and the Formula one event -- I would like to have done both but ended up going to the Doctor and the social event -- You just don't win all of what you like !! Do you ?

Sri- Clijsters winning is a real good sign for women who thought life was a status quo upon birth of children. Tennis is such a physical game and demands lot of fitness and to see Kim return from oblivion demonstrates her tenacity, and a can do attitude.. Our women have something to learn from her..

I have not watched Petro much, but I would assume coming from Argentina, he must be good inhard courts and clay courts. we will know more about Petro in hte next 12 months.
