Cricket -- India the No 1 team in ICC rankings -- what an achievement by the team!!
This has never happened to the Indian test cricket team. They have threatened to get to the top but did not quite get there--They had their task cut out on what to achieve in the recently concluded Test series against Srilanka.They had to beat Srilanka 2-0 to go up to the No 1 spot .
Srilanka was visiting India riding on their home success against the Kiwis who they had beat 2-0 in the test series and they have never won a series in India against India and wanted to prove otherwise as well. So the stage was set for a intense battle --
In the first test India rallied magnificently following conceding a huge first innings lead to draw the test -- this i think was the psychological barrier being crossed and India winning the battle -- if India had gone down in the first test , it would have been difficult to bounce back -- Then in the second and third test , the shoreline reflects " Innings victory " in both the tests --It was is great stuff from the Indian test Team --India got to this spot after playing Test Cricket for seventy seven years but i guess the ranking process started in late 2001 and so ...
Some key reasons for this ranking which i think will not last long as India is not scheduled to play too many Test cricket matches in the near future --
1. Virender Sehwag -- Why can't he play like this in all the matches-- he set up the victories in both the test matches with his arrogant decimation of the Srilankan bowlers ( Murali included )- Sehwag makes a mockery of the game with his own brand of cricket and his scoring rate.The game turns around very quickly -- I watched the highlights of his double hundred and was amazed at the way he toyed around -- When Sehwag plays in this manner , the umpires should not call " end of play " for the day and allow him to bat till he stops.The reason for me saying this is he looses rhythm the next day and gets out. I believe Lara's top score in test cricket will fall to Sehwag soon
2. Gautam Gambhir -- He has become the Mr Reliable only after Dravid -- He likes to stay on and enjoy his outing at the pitch and that is good for this talented young man.
3. Zaheer and Sreesanth -- Zaheer came back from injury and has not lost any sheen in his craft - As for Sreesanth , we hope he just bowls and does not get in to any more trouble .
4. Dhoni - capable leader , who is accepted by all in the team and he has the magic to make the right moves-
5. Gary Kirsten the Coach -- Non Controversial , has understood the cricketers well is my thought -- this is blow fuse anytime !!
6 Sachin , Dravid and Laxman -- The old warhorses continue to do their part and no one is complaining .
Finally it was such a good news to know that for getting to this No1 ranking , cash awards are being given to the Selectors and the support staff and that is most welcome-It was a great sight to see the Chairman of Selectors , the ever optimist Krish Srikkanth whistle as Sehwag got to his double figure mark-
All this said , India needs to be consistent on results and that i think will be on Gary Kirsten;s mind.
Football -- Did I say Chelsea are looking good this year ? NO -- I want to be on the fence
Last week , i wrote that Chelsea are finally getting it right -- they got it all wrong this week end -They lost a away game with Manchester City who finally won a match - Man City have been playing draws and this was causing noise in their system as they blew close to $ 100 Mils in buying players up, for this season .
Chelsea was up in front but then were outdone by Man City who found the back of the net twice and then when Chelsea got a chance to draw level with a penalty being given in their favour , Frank Lampard missed it and Chelsea ended up loosing 1 -2-- What this means is that Chelsea leads ManU by twp points after 15 games and that is not significant at all .. More action and excitement to follow as the league progress - Normally by Christmas time , patterns emerge but this time , it is neck to neck at the top!
