The Kruger National Park was formally established in 1926 with the amalgamation of two games reserve (forest reserve used for hunting - Sabi and Singwitsi). The move was made in an attempt to slow down slaughter and to protect wildlife. Today Kruger is seen as a major economic influence in the region, creating jobs and attracting valuable tourism revenue.
The park draws together vast conservation areas in South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, and forms one of the largest protected areas in Africa. The size of the park is 20,000 Sq. Km (equal to size of Wales) and as per the latest census, at least 47 mammals' species, 507 birds, 114 reptiles, 49 fish and 34 amphibians have been recorded.
Visitors can drive through the park and are strictly advised not to get out of the vehicle. Rides were also organised by park authorities.
It's open all year around but viewing is easiest in winter (June to August) when the park is at its driest, and animals gather at the waterholes. Some visitors choose the summer months (October to March) for the lush vegetation and bird breeding activity. In autumn (March to April), one can see the dramatic rutting of impala, wildebeest and other species and November to December, there is a good chance to catch the birth of young species.
It's advisable to visit the park early in the morning (park opens at 5.30 AM) as the chance of watching the bigger ones (Lions, tigers, Rhinos etc) are relatively higher. As the day moves on, the most common species one could come across are impala, giraffe, zebras, buffalo etc.
The cost of two day trip including accommodation is likely to be around R 1,000 but its all worth the money at the end of the day.
Warning – Should take anti- malaria precautions, especially in summer.
Verdict – Go for it!!

Formula 1 2007 to a close

What a amazing turnaround-- I had written that the Ferraris lost it - both the individual and the constructor ( team ) championship-- they got back in to the constructor couple of races ago as mclaren was docked of the points due to the spy scandal-- however for the individual championship , I thought the Rookie Hamilton had the title in his pocket and he was in the best position to win the title at the final race at Sao Paulo Brazil- he had 107 followed by Alonso at 103points and Raikone at 100- the winner gets 10 points followed by 8 points to 1 point scale for places second to eighth- There were lot of mathematical calculations before the race and it was all exciting-
Massa of Ferrari took the pole with Hamilton second followed by Raikonen and Alonso in that order- on the race day , Raikonen had a strong start and in the process Hamilton lost places at the corners to fall behind to eight on lap one of the seventy one laps-- All fine till the eight lap when Hamilton's car did not pick the gears-- It just went in to neutral and by the time it picked the gears , Hamilton was in eighteenth place , the other cars went past him- this was unusual as through the year the Mclaren had been reliable and I thought it was not a event that was normal-- the gear problem did not appear again through the race-- Meanwhile Raikonen placed himself comfortably behind Massa in second place.. Ferrari in their own style had Raikonen pass Massa at the second pit stop and take the lead ( the crowd was upset as Massa is from Brazil but that did not matter )
Raikone drove at great pace to win the race- Massa came second and Alonso third-- Hamilton had his quota of problems and finished a disappointing seventh that was not good enough to gain on point over Raikonen-- Thus Raikone the ice man from Finland had the last laugh-- there were some controversies ( yet to be resolved ) on the temperature of the fuel used by BMW and Williams in their cars that has been appealed by Mclaren -- Apparently the temperature used was not in line with the recommendations , thus letting the teams gain advantage on fuel efficency-- This allowed BMW and Williams to finish ahead of Hamilton-- So if Mclaren wins the appeal , Hamilton will move places up and win the world championship-- but that would be a shame-
Raikonen is a worthy champion and has fought his way through all the glamour that Alonso and Hamilton were making through their bitter relationship , because of which Mclaren did not deserve to win-- Raikone knows only one thing -- give him a car and he will drive it fast and clean- Alonso and Hamilton fought throughout the year trying to establish who was the best in Mclaren and this may have affected the entire team- Ron Denis the boss of Mclaren must have fumed at the way the championship went out of the team's hands in the last race-- I am a Ferrari fan and not complaining at all !! Curtains to the 2007 season..
