The Aussie Decline
If one thought that South Africa pulling of the test match in its favour was a one off and the Aussies would bounce back , it seemed true from the way the T20 matches went in favour of the Aussie -- But the one day internationals went in favour of SA again -- Without the inspirational Graeme Smith , SA did very well to put it past Aus, at 3 games to one with one match of insignificance to the series but of great importance in deciding who will be the number one in one day -- The Aussies will be down from the No 1 spot if SA wins and this will be after a very very long time at the top-- Rodney Hogg the former Aussie bowler rightly criticised Ricky Ponting for failing to accept reality and stop giving excuses-- With all the heavy weights gone , the Aussies look a poor side -- It was very evident in the way they handled the current series -- No recovery from poor starts , middle order collapse , none standing out in the batting -- till now even if the batting failed , the bowlers would back the batsman and get their opponents on the mat -- None of that is happening now -- There is no bowler that can be spoken of highly in the current Aussie line up -- As I wrote earlier , the decline is going to be steep and mind you , Ponting is not young and does not have the right players to back him if the Aussie want to be at the top
Australian Tennis Grand Slam
There was lot of hype about Andy Murray as a contender for the title in the season's first Grand Slam of the year -- Andy was knocked out by a Spanish player who has every chance to have a crack at the title -- Fernando Verdasco who was known more as the boy friend of Anna Ivanovic put out Murray and ensured that the talk of Murray claiming the title was only a talk ( Fernando also put out Jo Wilfred Songa to be in the Semi final where he will clash with Nadal ).Djokvic the defending champion got in to trouble as fans from Serbia had a overdose of beer during a late night match-- All these are distraction for a player --Djokovic lost to Andy Roddick . In fact he retired due to exhaustion -- Melbourne heat does get to the players and this Grand Slam is a big testimony to players Stamina-- How can I ,miss out Roger Federer -- Federer is in the Finals -- If he wins , he will break the ,most Grand Slam titles held by Pete Sampras -- I would love to see him do that -- I was looking at text of the matches and when he walked for his Qfinal match against Del Potro , the umpire asked to Federer " How are you " and Federer responded with a nice " Fine -- How are you " -- Normally players get themselves psyched up for the match and do not indulge in niceties -- But Federer is Federer -- A great champion who plays the game with great sporting understanding and it is difficult not to love and like this true Champion from Swiss I am eagerly awaiting the final this week end
